February is here!

Well, it is officially February. And while we all know about the popular day of love, St. Valentines Day - some of us might choose to celebrate some of the more interesting holidays instead! Like Oscar’s Night on the 24th! I mean, yes, it might not be a nationally recognized holiday, but that doesn’t make it any less important.

Perfect hair color is healthier looking salon bliss

You know what else is awesome - hair with texture and volume. Lucky for us, Keune has an amazing new product to help with that.

Inspiration!

First let’s start with some STUNNING color from this past month. Notice the various colors used in each and the dimension it adds? So beautiful!!! (If we do say so ourselves). By the way, both of these colors are slated to be hot this year! See below for more 2019 trends.

Next, let’s look to some of the beauty industry experts for some inspiration on what is going to be trendy this year!

On the color front Elle Magazine says: coral (see, we told you it was on trend), snow bunny blond, Cher black and orange/red are going to be big! Take a look! On the cut side of things, rounded bobs and curtain bangs are the top contenders. You can see more ideas here.

For the teen set, Seventeen magazine is predicting that the pastel trend will continue, with pink and icy blue topping the list. Shadow roots also made the cut. More ideas found here!

As far as Spring styles, apparently it is a blast from the past with features from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s all showing up on the runways.

As always, if you are not sure what direction you want to go, your favorite Salon Bliss stylist would be glad to help. So bring in your ideas, and let’s have some fun this year!

Fall Happenings!

How is it almost the end of the year already?!?!? Where did it all go? We don’t know either.

Fall has been full of unusual and cool things.

To highlight just a few:

Niysa showing her fancy braid in Edinburgh, Scotland! Becka and Niysa spent two weeks in Ireland and Scotland. Of course, Becka couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do wedding hair in Ireland (who could?)

Sulfates. Do we need to be concerned about them?

By Liliya Barss

What are sulfates? And why there is a growing concern about them? A sulfate is an additive used as a surfactant, a foaming agent that helps to release oil and dirt from our skin and hair. There has been a lot of research done about sulfates' possible harmful effects on the human body. This research shows that a 1% or less concentration is safe for us. Now let's look deeper into that subject. Do you know that skin is the biggest organ that we have? Yes, you heard it right -skin is an organ, as it has all the characteristics of an organ. And skin's ability to absorb is amazing! If you happen to live in Central Oregon, take a trip over the mountains to the coast and see what happens to your skin. Within an hour your skin gets smooth and silky without moisturizing creams! It absorbs the moisture that is dispersed in the air! Now what about the substance that you put directly onto your skin day in and day out? How does our body react when we put harmful chemicals on our skin?

Our body's ability to protect itself is amazing! In this case it produces enzymes to break down certain chemicals. Over time, though, our body slows down in producing these enzymes, what happens then? Then those chemicals accumulate in our bodies and the concentration that was initially safe for us might become harmful. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health higher doses of sulfates may cause negative effects in the kidneys, liver and nervous system. Unfortunately, studies involving the long-term cumulative effects of continued sulfate or SLS exposure are lacking. But do you want to take any chances - especially if there are alternatives? So look for shampoos, toothpastes and other personal care products that are sulfate free. Stay healthy!

Hair Care is not Only an Art but a Science

By Liliya Barss

Today I am going to talk about understanding your hair. As I mention to my clients I was a teacher prior to becoming a hairdresser - and as a teacher my mind always goes to “why”. I need to understand the reason or science behind the action. I believe in the importance of educating my clients, helping them to understand what is important for THEIR hair and why. Every day in our salon we cover one subject or another. We hear such expressions as “I don’t know what to do with my hair”, “How do I style my hair?”, “My hair is so oily or dry or brittle”, “I am losing my hair” and many more. So here we, your stylists, become hair counselors, experts that understand the science of hair.

On our blog I am going to cover different aspects of healthy hair. It is a very big subject, so I will cover it one by one, starting with the elementary, but not a simplistic subject - shampooing our hair.

If you want to keep your hair healthy and that hard earned color intact – upgrading your shower essentials is a must. Now – why?

Here comes the science. The pH of skin and hair is 4.5 to 5.5, which is slightly acidic. The neutral pH is 7, and everything from 7 to 10 is alkaline. In 1960s beauty pioneer Jeri Redding revolutionized the salon industry by being the first to market pH-balanced shampoos. He went around the country staging demonstrations that showed how acidic shampoos outperformed alkaline shampoos. Acid hardens the hair by closing the cuticle and keeping your hair strong. Alkali softens the hair by opening the cuticle, thus making your hair brittle and prone to damage. Professional grade shampoos are tested and have a pH that ranges from 5 to 7. Most drugstore shampoos are alkaline and filled with waxes and animal fats. At this point you might as well be washing your hair with baking soda, which has a pH of 8.4.

The other big difference between a drugstore shampoo and a professional one - is the molecule size. Shampoo might contain all the right ingredients for our hair, but if the molecule size is too big to penetrate into a hair shaft, then it all goes down the drain. This is when it comes to good technology to reduce the particle size of ingredients. To give you an example: we know that essential oils are good for our hair and skin. But let’s say you put coconut or olive oil on your hair and skin, can you stand that greasiness?! The reason why it is so greasy is that the molecule size is so big that it can’t be absorbed and it so it just sits on top. Thanks to modern technologies the particle size can be reduced and become absorbable!

Nowadays we hear about the importance of using sulfate-free products. What are sulfates and why we should stay away from them? Stay tuned - that’s what I am going to discuss in the next blog post!

Slow and Easy Wins the Race

By: Christine Davis

Hair is a reflection of our inner selves. It's something we take pride in. For many, it's a canvas, our crowning glory - it greatly affects our self esteem, attitude and actions. In my 10 years of doing hair my motto has always been "slow and easy wins the race". Meaning, don't rush the process and don't force your hair into something it's not meant to be.

If someone has a been coloring their hair a dark brown for a long period of time and wants to be platinum blonde in one session, I am honest and let the client know the time and investment it will take to achieve this color. Sometimes it can take several appointments to get the desired look depending on the condition of their hair. My job as a stylist is to be real about what it takes to get that "Pinterest" picture perfect look, all while keeping the hair healthy. One of my favorite stylists to follow on Instagram regularly posts about her appointments that take 4-5 hours to get her client to an icy platinum blonde. What are those pictures are missing? The behind the lens effort it can take to achieve those results. Try to keep in mind that the perfect hair in your inspiration photo probably didn't happen over night.

But don't despair! If you don't have the time or wish to make the investment to get "that" look, a simple highlight, color gloss or lowlights can still do wonders! We as stylists are here for you and will help you feel beautiful. Just remember, slow and easy wins the race!

Ahhhhhh.....Stands for Massage

Author: Dallas Leffler

Last week on the blog we talked about different forms of self care.  This week we are going to break it down more specifically to massage.

I wanted to become a massage therapist because I realized that I was forgetting what it meant and felt like to make a meaningful connection with someone.  I began to feel that I could ‘connect’ through social media, and I realized that was completely backwards.

Massage, to me, offers one of the longest stretches of time I spend awake where I don’t hear my phone go off, I am not waiting for an email or text.  It gives me at least an hour to let go of technology and the world of social media.  Massage allows for a connection to yourself, to pay attention to how your body feels (I forgot how tired my right shoulder gets at the end of the day), and to allow your mind to disconnect from the web of technology that fuels it.

Massage is like a mini vacation from reality.

So how long would you like your vacation to be? 60 minutes? 90 minutes? Contact us today to plan yours!
